Martha arrived in the United States at Ellis Island on August 10, 1904, with her sisters, BERTHA and OLGA. They were escorted by their half-sister, ELLA Forst, who had first come to Cleveland in 1898 and returned to Germany bring her sisters back to Cleveland with her.

Since my grandmother died in 1953 when I was 9 years old, I have very little memory of her outside of the photographs that remain. The above image of Martha in the kitchen, one of the only candids of my "Grandma Herman," represents the way I remember her . . . in the kitchen. I still make the German Potato Salad that she once made from HER mother"s recipe and taught my mother to make. I remember the streudels, the kuchens, and especially the homemade ketchup that was among the many home canned foods kept in their root cellar. It was a sad day when the last bottle of her ketchup was emptied. But not quite as sad as the day when Grandma died.
